Here is on of the band( Tom XXV /25 ) of the book called Le Voyageur Francoise which I got from a shop which sells second hand items for house. Very seldom they get also few books and I guess I was really lucky to come across this book before someone else did. I can bet that few of them turned away as they could not estimate its age due to the fact that it is given in Roman letters.
In old books sometimes the publishing date is given in Roman numbers. To quickly encrypt the the Roman text and calculate the age of the book you shall remember those simple notations
- "M" stands for - 1000
- "D" - 500
- "C" - 100
- "L" - 50
- "X" - 10
- "V" - 5
- "I" - 1
Counting Rule
If the symbol is on the left side of a higher rank symbol than you substruct its value
If the symbol is on the right side of a higher rank symbol than you add its value
So " IX " equivalent to 10 -1 = 9 and XI = 10+1 = 11
For this book M DCC L XX IX equivalent to 1000 + 500 + 100 +100 +50 +10 +10 +10 -1 = 1779
