The book I want to discuss today is De La Jeunesse by Victor Hugo, published in Paris in the late 19 beginning of 20 century (1900 most likely, but still investigating). I found this book in a street market in Amsterdam. First of all I noticed the gilded page sites (golden protection layer) of the book reflecting the sun directly to my eyes. Then when I freed it from the pile of other books I discovered the amazing cover and already right there I was convinced that I will get this book.
Here is the gilded edges on a book.
Investigating further I opened the title page which shows a picture of a cute boy and typical info (publisher, edition, etc ) one should always look for.
So what it tells us
Title: VICTOR HUGO De La Jeunesse
Publisher: G. Marpon & E. Flammarion, Editeurs, 26, rue Racine, près de l'Odéon s.d.
Book has great illustrations by A .Brun, Adrien Marie, A. Lançon, C.Julien, J. Ferat, Ldovic Mouchot, Rochegrosse, Wogel
The publication date is not mentioned however I was able to find a note in the web that this edition was published in 1900.
The book is filled with plenty engravings and few pencil notes from previous owners.
Below you can find few of them
Books like this are appealing no matter if you know the language in this case French or no. So convinced that this is a great find I took out my wallet and started to bargain over the price. I drop the price a little bit and made the deal !
